Opinion: Remain sensitive when discussing Israel’s events

The Israel-Hamas war is an incredibly sensitive topic. However, it is one that needs to be discussed, albeit respectfully.

Undoubtedly, these recent issues need to be talked about. If there are no conversations on acts of terrorism, such as the recent actions of Hamas, then such organizations have more power. It is from mystery and fear that terrorists draw their strength. Talking about the actions of Hamas and groups like them creates informed citizens, taking away some of the fear that terrorists exploit.

Discussing these events also must be done without fighting. Such is a tall order, but it is important to, at the very least, try to keep facts at the forefront of the conversation to create as civil an environment as possible.

Similarly, when having these discussions, people need to be as sympathetic as possible. Real people are being hurt, both directly and indirectly. There are people with many different opinions, emotional connections and knowledge about the situation. Because of that, we will inevitably encounter people who disagree with our opinion, no matter what that opinion may be.

People discussing these recent events need to separate their emotions from the reality of the situation. For example, individuals must recognize that the acts of Hamas and the opinions and feelings of the Palestinian people who do not support Hamas are separate.

It is also important to keep in mind that people have varying opinions and levels of knowledge on the subject. Necessary or not, these conversations are uncomfortable enough as it is; there does not need to be the added stress of one side dominating a discussion. Remaining impartial and calm to remove emotion from the conversation is key to keeping talks on the Israel-Hamas War as respectful as possible.

One of the best places for these discussions is in schools. Students go to school to learn and one of the topics that must be discussed is current events. Yes, there should be an option to sit out of the conversation should a student get too emotional, but this topic must be covered for high school students if not younger grade levels as well. This could also lead to the discussion being taken home, giving parents a chance to tell their children what thoughts they have on the issue.

While this is an issue that must be discussed, including in schools, many important ideas must be kept in mind. To start with, Palestinians and Hamas should not be senselessly perceived as having the same intentions. Similarly, it is necessary to remember the lengthy history that Israel has with hostile states and terrorist organizations. With all of this, it is important to separate emotion from the topic when possible. Overall, this must be discussed with as much sympathy and as little fighting as possible. It is uncomfortable to talk about, but a civil discussion on these recent issues is necessary.
