Sophomore Maddie Kaplan meticulously slides the tiny turquoise bead onto a thin wire and wraps it around a leather band that is just long enough to tie snugly around one’s wrist. This hand-made bracelet, along with all of the jewelry she creates, not only portrays her sharp eye but also illustrates her ability to connect with her imagination.

Last summer, Kaplan drew inspiration from styles at the clothing store, Planet Blue. After creating her first piece of jewelry, Kaplan knew her long-term dream would soon become a reality. At the start of Summer 2011, Kaplan and her friend, Abby Zakharian, were only amateurs who longed to create works of art similar to those that they admired behind the shiny glass counters at Planet Blue. Since then, their jewelry grew from simple wooden bracelets with fake beads to quality works of art that include real leather decorated with turquoise and emeralds. Besides gaining a sense of pride from her accomplishments, Kaplan’s jewelry making has provided her with a sense of purpose.

il_fullxfull-319922290“Making creations requires a lot of patience and hours of practice.” said Kaplan “It taught me that if I put my mind to something, I can do it. We have grown together as the creators, but we know it won’t stop here. We still have a lot more to accomplish.”
Kaplan began the organization, Young Dreamers, in order to aid children in need. Kaplan’s talents and jewelry making skills fuel her passion for helping others through her endeavor to create beautiful works of art. Young Dreamers’ merchandise includes bracelets, rings and dreamcatchers, and currently, Kaplan has set up her company on Etsy.com, where all her products are sold. Young Dreamers is also on Tumblr and is currently in the process of setting up its own website where Kaplan hopes to gain exposure and be put alongside other brand name companies. Each piece of jewelry is unique and represents Kaplan’s own individuality.
“Jewelry is an expression of beauty no matter the piece,” said Kaplan. “Every creation is always beautiful because everything is so different.”
An important goal of Young Dreamers is to give back to the community in order to benefit those who are less fortunate. Through her company, she earns money by selling her products to friends, family, or anyone looking for their own one-of-a-kind bracelet. Kaplan and Zakharian donate a portion of their revenue to Children’s Hospital and Children’s Life Saving Foundation, using rest of the money to purchase jewelry making supplies.
“Young Dreamers started off as being a creative outlet for Abby and me,” said Kaplan. “We then decided to help others by using our artistic abilities.”
Kaplan’s jewelry company is a combination of passion and desire to make the world a better place. She hopes to pursue jewelry making as a career and takes pride in helping others. With large goals and plans for her future, Kaplan is truly a Young Dreamer.
