Teachers have more impact on students’ lives than many people realize and carry significant responsibility. For example, they can build a student’s confidence, help them through difficult situations, and give life-changing advice to seniors about their post-graduation path. Relationships built over years of learning and mentorship often become especially meaningful as graduation approaches.
For most teenagers, school is one of the most important parts of their everyday lives. Teachers play a major role in shaping how students experience school. A fun classroom activity or a few words of encouragement can brighten a student’s day and help them connect with their peers. Many seniors turn to trusted teachers to navigate hardships. Although their gratitude may go unspoken, the influence teachers have on their lives is truly appreciated.
A recent social media trend invited people to share stories about their favorite teacher and how they impacted their lives under the pseudonym “Miss Honey,” inspired by the caring teacher in Roald Dahl’s Matilda. As noted by Giorgia Orlandi, a senior at Calabasas High School, her own “Miss Honey,” Ms. Rizk, played a key role in helping her gain confidence in speaking English. Beyond academics, Rizk provided a safe space, which is often much needed by foreign exchange students.
“Ms. Rizk actually listens to us and is able to work with every student individually, based on each student’s needs,” said Orlandi.
Orlandi also said that Ms. Rizk’s class motivated her to overcome senioritis, which is common among many students near graduation.
Counselors also play a similar role to teachers. They guide students and teach them how to handle situations when they do not know where else to turn. As mentioned by senior Caterina Ciarlantin, Mr. Rivas is the ultimate “Mr. Honey.”
“He is such a light and never fails to make me smile, even when I’m having a hard time. All of my friends have the same opinion,” said Ciarlantin.
Counselors often serve as the listeners that not every student has at home, taking the time to make each individual feel seen and supported.
The influence of a great teacher can be difficult to measure and easy to overlook. If this article brings a particular teacher to mind, consider reaching out to thank them.
