When one hears the beautiful voice of Scottish singer Emeli Sandé, it is strange to think that she is not one of the more prominent singers of our time. Most would recognize Sandé from her recent performance at the opening of the 2012 Summer Olympics; however, more dedicated fans would know Sandé from the songs she wrote for other famous performers. She has worked with big-name artists such as Susan Boyle, Cheryl Cole, Leona Lewis, Cher Lloyd and Rihanna. Sandé won “Critic’s Choice” in the Brit Awards on February 21, 2012. Sandé currently has a record deal with Virgin and Capitol Records, and is expected by critics to soon become much more than just a voice in the background. Sandérejects the commercial pop singers in favor of more poetic artists. She cites Nina Simone, a famous jazz singer and civil rights activist, as one of her biggest inspirations. Sandé musical style is especially unique because she puts so much effort into making a lyrical connection with her listeners. Her refusal to join the ranks of “throwaway pop stars” and her push to become a lasting musical influence make Emeli Sandé an artist to watch out for!
